EDELE SEARCH TIPS

The best search strategy to use depends on what you are looking for. The following tips are based on the unique ways that searches work on the EDELE site. Searching for data on specific topics

NOTE that EDELE uses a defined list of categories/topics/sub-topics based on the EDELE framework (Framework of all Categories/Topics). Each web page in the database is associated with one or more topics and sub-topics.

The best way to see a list of all possible search topics is: Go to the ADVANCED SEARCH page. At the section on “Sub-categories/ Topics/ Sub-topics” click on Expand All

Advanced Search

Advanced Search can be used to find records with data that meet several search criteria such as a specific state, a specific topic, a specific data display (tables, graphs, maps), specific data type (static, customizable, raw), number of years covered (1 to 2, 3 or more), or update schedule (regularly updated or one point in time).

On the results page you have the option to “Refine your Search”, which is very useful if you want to narrow or change your search.

Keyword searching is also available on the Advanced Search page.

Keyword Search

Keyword searching is most useful if you are looking for data for a SPECIFIC YEAR or from a SPECIFIC SOURCE such as an Academic Institution or Facility.

EXAMPLE: Enter 2004 – to find data collected or published in 2004.
Enter “University of Michigan” to find data published by that institution.

The Keyword Search is literal and looks only for the identical word or phrase entered. It finds only identical matches.

EXAMPLE: "Caregiver" will return a different list of records than "Caregivers".
"U. Michigan" may not be found even if there are records published by the University of Michigan.

Keyword Searching is not Boolean – it will not process connectors (“and”, “or”, “not”) and it does not recognize symbols such as the asterisk (*).

Keyword Search is best used for parameters that do not appear on the advanced search page. DO NOT use the keyword field to search by topic. Instead, use the Topic Search page or the “Sub-categories/ Topics/ Sub-topics” section of the Advanced Search Page. (See Searching for data on specific topics, above.) If you want to try searching for a phrase, enter the entire phrase (“Cause of death” rather than “Cause death”)

Questions Search

Questions search is most useful if you want to start with a broad area of interest, then narrow it down by choosing from a list of predefined questions. The questions are pre-written and are connected to specific EDELE topics and subtopics.
